Testing is a poor predictor of future student success as well as an unreasonable measure of teacher and school proficiency. Over reliance on standardized testing has damaged the quality of our educational system. The pressure put on students and teachers to be “ready” for these tests has led to an environment where the pacing of our curriculum makes no sense and strips our teachers of the kind of professional autonomy needed to be effective educators. Of additional concern is the significant cultural, racial, and ability bias in any kind of prescribed testing.
SOL exams have become a barrier to student success beyond FCPS. The school board will need to work more closely with members of the General Assembly to ease the restrictive requirements placed on FCPS graduates.
